Richard C. “Dick” Cook, Jr., 73, lifelong resident of Middlefield, passed away Tuesday, November 27, 2018 at UH Cleveland Medical Center. He was a son of the late Richard C and Marvel (Hatch) Cook, born in Chardon on February 7, 1945. After he graduated from Cardinal High School in 1964, he served in the U.S. Army for two years, with his most memorable time spent as a General Supply Clerk in Germany. He married Judith Ohl on April 20, 1968. They celebrated their 50th anniversary with a family celebration and then traveled to Gatlinburg and the Biltmore Estate. Dick displayed his hard work ethic with more than 50 years as an operator and foreman, spending most years with Kingsbury, Osterland and Shelly paving companies. He retired from the Local 18 Operators Union in 2010. He was a friendly face in the community and enjoyed being with his family and friends. His hobbies included constructing his own train village layout, including an asphalt plant, ski lodge, city center and farm. He also loved building model trucks. Dick’s passion was fishing for walleye and perch on Lake Erie. He “hooked” his family on camping and fishing, by spending many days on the waters of Pymatuning and Mosquito Lakes. He custom-built a camp trailer, ready to go in a moment’s notice. He could quickly load the kids bikes inside and throw the boat on top for a weekend getaway. It was the envy of the campgrounds. Camping traditions continued, where he introduced his grandchildren to a taste for the outdoors, with annual family trips to Buckeye Lake. Dick and Judy enjoyed traveling together with favorite stops in Hawaii, Alaska and Maine. Three couple’s Anniversaries, including Dick and Judy’s 25th, were celebrated on a cruise to the Bahamas. His most frequent and memorable trips were to Florida with family and their dear friend, “Mickey.”
Dick is survived by his beloved wife Judy; two sons, Jason and his wife Kelly and Matthew and his wife Stacy, two loving grandchildren, Ashleigh and Zachary, his brother Chuck (Annette) Cook, and nieces and nephews. He is preceded in death by his parents, his brother Jim (Nancy) and sister Jane Ann Cook.
Visitation will be 4:00-7:00 PM with a Celebration of memories shared by his family at 7:00 PM, Friday, November 30, 2018 at Russell-Sly Family Funeral Home, 15670 West High St., Middlefield, OH 44062. A private burial will be in Middlefield Cemetery.
