After enjoying a beautiful day of boating on Lake Erie, Marten E. Merryfield Jr. (Sonny) passed away doing what he loved on September 23, 2018. He was 85 years old. Born November 28, 1932, Sonny was a lifelong resident of Middlefield, Ohio. He graduated from Middlefield School in 1950 and attended Coyne Electrical School in Chicago, Illinois. While attending church there, he met his late wife of 66 years, Hope. Sonny and Hope were married on December 14, 1951, and shortly after, he left to serve his country in the Korean War. Upon his return, the couple built a wonderful life together that included three children, a successful business, and service as upstanding community members.
Sonny was the President of Merryfield Electric, Inc.—a family business that he built with his father, Marten Sr., and later, his son, Mark. His work ethic was outstanding, and only recently did he retire in 2017. He was a master electrician, and he was sharp as a tack. He took great pride in a job well done, which, to him, was the only way to do it. During summers, Sonny stepped away from work to enjoy time on his boat and was a proud Chris-Craft owner. He was a member of the Mentor Lagoons Yacht Club and served as Commodore for several years. He belonged to the International Order of the Blue Gavel Association for Past Commodores. Sonny was a Kentucky Colonel and a member of Middlefield VFW Post 9678, Orwell American Legion Post 719 and the Forty & Eight. He was known for his “secret recipe” chicken dinners, and was the grill master for many community events, including the Middlefield Swiss Cheese Festival.
Sonny will be missed dearly by those who knew him, especially his son, Mark E. Merryfield of Middlefield, OH; daughters, Melinda (Bill) Becker of Delano, MN and Christy (Tim) Mundy of Logan, OH; granddaughter, Brooke (Reggie) Rios of Los Angeles, CA; and great granddaughter, Hope Emma Rios.
Sonny was preceded in death by his wife, Hope; parents, Marten Sr. and Julia Merryfield; sisters, Charlene Klingman and Joan Jemison; niece Martha Sykora; and daughter-in-law, Cheryl Merryfield.
A Celebration of life will be held 1:00 PM Tuesday, October 2, 2018, at Russell-Sly Family Funeral Home, 15670 W. High Street, Middlefield, OH 44062. Visitation will be 2:00-4:00 and 7:00-9:00 PM Monday, October 1st at the Funeral home, and Tuesday 12:00 until the time of the service.
